Julie Matthews Completes Newport Marathon

On Sunday 16th April Julie Matthews completed the Newport Marathon, raising £500 for the captain’s charity, Great Western Air Ambulance.

Julie started her training at the beginning of the new year and come, wind, rain or shine she never gave up and pushed on with her 16 week training plan, increasing her mileage as she progressed, including slotting in a half marathon in Weymouth on March the 15th.

And what a result:

2,700 runners gathered at 9:00am in prefect conditions on Newport's vibrant river front and set off on the 26.2 mile route that a included the city centre, the historic castle, a loop of the sports village, the Gwent levels, Redwick Village and Newport Wetlands before returning to the start / finish line.

Julie put in a scorching race pace of 10.46 mins / mile finishing in a fantastic time of 4hrs 50min, placing 28th in the 55-60 female age group category and 2269th overall. What an achievement!!

After gathering for breath and feeling somewhat emotional she rehydrated with a very well deserved glass of champagne (or two!).

Congratulations from the club for Julie's effort and raising so much for the Captain's charity.
